We want to keep a close eye on the characters in this story. How are the characters described? Why is each important to the story?
Practice
Choose a partner. On one half of a piece of paper make a list of this person's character traits. On the other half of paper, write some specific examples of when this person exemplified these characteristics.
Now think of HOW this example proves the characteristic. (For example: If you say Sarah is shy, an example might be when Sarah was asked to present some information in front of the English class and she turned beet red and ran out of the room. Then, explain how running out of the room might show that Sarah is shy.)
Verbally share this characteristic, example, and explanation with someone at your table.
Look at the list of characteristic traits.
Now, look at the picture of Mike Tyson. Discuss what he is notorious for. Brainstorm a list of characteristic traits that fit Mike Tyson. Follow the same process as above.
Discuss/Model
As a class, describe the character of Colonel Killigrew. Use textual evidence in your analysis.
Concrete Detail Sentence (Evidence. Embed quotes and use signal phrases.)
Commentary 1 (Meaning or significance of evidence/quote)
Commentary 2 (How does evidence support your point?)
